Spark At WOMAD
From the 29th - 31st of July, thousand of people (including Spark's own JB) descented upon Malmesbury's Charlton Park for the world famous WOMAD festival. The weekend was filled with a vast array of sights and sounds from around the world which meant that there was never a moment going to waste. JB witnessed amazing sets from all kinds of musical acts ranging from South Korean trios to a Cajun Indie family band, there was something for everyone at WOMAD.
One of the main highlights for JB this year was the Satuday night headline set by Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela that captivated the huge crowd with classics such as "Hanuman" and "Buster Voodoo" and playful suprises such as Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Metallica's "Seek and Destroy". Straight after that there wasn't yet another act that left the audience stunned; Baaba Maal sang into the night and help create an evening that will be remembered for years to come. In the Big Red Tent you had The Boxettes (featuring champion beatboxer Bellatrix) warm up an eager crowd with vocal skills that featured an awe - inspiring bass vocal that just shook you to your very core. This led onto everybody getting their best skank on for Dub Pistols as they kept the crowd on their feet for the duration of their set with suprise guest after suprise guest.
When not taking the the wide range of music on offer, there was the huge selection of foods that you could try at any time of the day. From fresh corn on the cob combo's to the Japanese noodle bar you could anything and everything you could possibly think of at a very good festival price. (JB highly recommends the Ethiopian/Eritrean stall, a massive plate of delicious food for only a fiver!)
Once you've filled yourself up there was the experience known as the Forest of Wellbeing. The special area of the festival is home to a whole array of treatments such as Shiatsu message that soothes all the aches and pains of a festival. Traditional treatment not you thing? Then worry not, there were specialist and alternative options availiable such as Sound Immersion therapy that clense both the mind and soul.
So if a weekend that offers a vast array of great music that ranges from well known names to obscure gems is your thing with a great atmosphere where new friends are aplenty then JB and Spark highly recommends checking out the amazing sights and sounds of WOMAD in 2012.
