One hundred young people from across Wiltshire were joined by transport companies at a conference recently to discuss key travel issues and solutions.
The event, which was held at the Corn Exchange in Devizes on Friday February 19, was designed and delivered by Wiltshire Council and the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth (WAY).
The young people were joined by a host of local transport providers including Stagecoach, First Bus, Wiltshire and Dorset Bus Co. and voluntary sector community transport schemes.
Working in community groups, young people and transport providers identified major local transport issues and county wide issues. The cost of transport, particularly buses, for young people under the age of 18 came out as a clear priority. Young people discussed inconsistencies in the age and cost of a child bus fare as being their main concern.
Young people created a ‘statement of intent’ which affirms: "Over the next six months we will work together towards a ‘fairer transport deal’ for young people in Wiltshire up to the age of 18.” Signatories to the statement include Stagecoach South and Stagecoach Swindon, the Wiltshire and Dorset Bus Co., Wiltshire councillors Richard Gamble and Richard Clewer, David Whewell, Wiltshire Counil's head of youth work and Liam Tatton-Bennett on behalf of the voluntary sector.
