Skills Festival Lackham College
The Festival, at Wiltshire College Lackham on June 29 and 30, was attended by 1500 school students and over 90 of their parents.
It was organised by Connexions Wiltshire, Wessex Chamber of Commerce and Wiltshire College and gave young people a chance to talk to employers and colleges and find out more about a wide range of courses and careers available to them locally.
Wiltshire’s VTalent volunteers, who are on a year-long volunteering programme with the council, interviewed young people about the festival, their hopes and dreams in the Connexions Big Brother Diary Room while young people from Wiltshire’s youth website and online radio station, Sparksite, also reported on the day.
Yr 10 student Jordan, 15, said she was surprised to find out that she enjoyed the health and beauty stand.
“It was not really something I thought I was interested in, but I had a go and I enjoyed it. It was quite interesting learning about the different college courses and what you need to study.”
Lauren, 15, enjoyed talking to staff at the Wiltshire College stand. “I’m very interested in fashion design and textiles. Now I’ve got a good idea of what qualifications I’ll need and what courses to do. It’s made me much clearer about what I want to do and how to go about it.”
Pete, 15, is interested in a career in the RAF.
“I thought about it before but at the festival I’ve found out more about what is on offer and how to go about it.”
Ryan, 15, said there were lots of interesting things at the festival, but nothing that he wanted to do.
“I want to be a professional footballer,” he said.
