Reduction in EMA Grant for 16+

Wiltshire Council has reviewed its transport assistance scheme for 16 to 19 year olds following the Government's decision to withdraw the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

The withdrawal of EMA means that students from low income families will no longer receive funding to help them access their further education courses. This payment has previously helped students pay for a reduced rate travel pass offered by Wiltshire Council.

Post 16 students currently pay either £190 if they are from a low income family or a standard charge of £378. The council will reduce the existing lower rate annual charge by 26 percent to £140. The reduction will be offset by a small increase in the charge for other students of 5.8 per cent to £400 per year. Students can continue to pay by instalments to help spread the cost of the annual charge.
