NCS 2011

NCS Summer Programme

Phase 1

At the start of our NCS we were all asked if we would like to take part in a new project set up by the government to enable us to meet new people from all backgrounds and take part in a community project and gain accreditation. We met regularly to arrange dates and learn more about the course we were starting. In our preparations we discussed social action projects and fundraising schemes.

We then did a team building day of caving which was good fun where we helped and supported each other. We agreed to push ourselves but with also not going somewhere all members did not wish to go?

Phase 2

The away residential to YHA Welsh Bicknor was designed to help us with team work and communication skills within our group which were learnt through various activities and challenges to provide us with necessary skills for later in the course.

The activities included team building exercises which were done every night such as save the egg in which they were designed to enable the group as a whole to work better together.

Our first main activity was rock climbing which was fun and challenging at the same time and made us supportive of other as we had to guide each other in which we had to place a lot of trust in our peers.

The next activity was canoe/kayaking which was really fun and exciting. We did a 5 miles down the River Wye in which we kept team spirits high and helped each other.

Another activity was raft building which was the favoured activity of them all as it provided a challenge and a race in which we specifically designed ours to capsize so we had to work hard as a team to keep it upright.

Overall the whole residential was really good and a great experience. We all got along well and really enjoyed the activities.
