Leisure Credits YP Worked Hard in Easter Hol's

Leisure Credits is a scheme where young people undertake work we have organised in their local communities to earn credits which pay for trips and activities of their choice - these have included going to Thorpe Park, Ice Skating, Bowling and Go Ape.

This is what they did in the Easter holidays to earn these credits:-

Mesh Pond, Downton - Young people worked for two days clearing the stagnant stream, they removed rubbish and cleared plants from the area to help protect other plants and help them grow. They cleared plants and silt in the water so that by the time we left the water was flowing again.

A member of the local community, Mike Slade has long championed the clearing of Mesh Pond. Unfortunately he didn't see this work being undertaken as he passed away from cancer. What was especially pleasing for the young people was the fact that a number of local residents made a point of speaking to the young people and commented on how hard the young people were working and the great results they were achieving.

Emma Proctor, Extended Services Cluster Manager for the local area was in contact with Mike and was aware of his vision for the pond.  She will be organising family events in the near future to help keep up with the clearing.

The group are going to go back in the summer and are hoping to build a dipping platform which enable children (of alla ges) to see what wildlife there is living in the water.

Whitebridge Park, Laverstock - Last summer a group treated the benches and a picnic table at the park but ran out of time to complete the job. Tony Nye, Youth Development Co-ordinator, spoke to the Parish Clerk to offer to finish off the job by treating the remaining benches, an offer which was enthusiastically taken up. Therefore a group of young people went back and spent a day in the hot weather rubbing down and treating the benches to finish off the job.

Riverbourne Community Farm, Laverstock - Artist in residence area - Young people undertook various tasks during The day to help prepare the Artist in Residence area.

These tasks included clearing the path and gate into the area which was very over grown with plants, stumps and some barbed wire!  This was cleared so the gate can be used properly. Another task undertaken was helping to clear the barn and area around the barn which will be the main area used by the artist in residence.  This included putting up a fence and smashing up wood which could be used by the artisit to burn underneath baths where she cleans wool for sculptures.

All of these projects were supported by Rose Salmi from BTCV and Youth Action Wiltshire - thank you for your help and support Rose, you were fab.

All of the young people worked incredibly hard, especially considering the hot weather we had and are now very much looking forward to their well earned activities and days out.
