Chippenham Young People's Forum
On Wednesday 16th November 2011 about 40 children and young people from the Chippenham area came together to work on a vision and strategy for Chippenham.
Young people from about 15 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and the Chippenham CAYPIG attended - representatives from the different schools (mostly school council members) were there to give their views on life in Chippenham and how it could be improved.
Young people were welcomed to the day by Judy Edwards, Extended Schools Coordinator for Chippenham. The Mayor for Chippenham also introduced himself, and extended an invitation to all schools in Chippenham to invite him into their schools to talk about the town council and listen to their views. The mayor was very much open to going out to schools- so why not get your school to invite him?
The Wiltshire Council Voice and Influence Team delivered 2 workshops to the young people - one based on the Youth Strategy for Chippenham and the other on A Vision(s) for Chippenham. Young people were asked to think about the 3 most important things they would like to see in Chippenham, whether it is important that young people have a say in local decisions and what would make Chippenham more appealing to local people.
Throughout the day young people were also asked to put their comments on a 'graffiti wall' about what is good in Chippenham and what is not so good (Check out some of their comments on the pictures attached).
The day was closed by the Leader of the Council, Jane Scott who congratulated the Children's Parliament for their work on a road safety DVD, and presented them with a cheque for £200 for their work in the community.
The feedback from the day is attached (word document). Check it out! If you have a view on Chippenham that you think has not been recorded, please let Christina Gregory know on christina.gregory@wiltshire.gov.uk.
The Chippenham Young Peoples Forum will keep you updated with how they are getting on. The next meeting is in February- so if you have anything that you would like them to discuss then let us know on lcp@chippenhamlcp.org.
